Afghanistan is one of approximately 50 countries in Asia and is considered to be a South Asian country. The present flag of Afghanistan was adopted on August 19, 2013. It consists of a detailed wreath design in white against a background of vertical bands of black, red, and green. If you are looking to draw the flag of Afghanistan, it helps to know that the emblem is detailed and you will need to take great care and use patience to draw it well. In particular, pay close attention to the proportion of the parts of the emblem.

Preparing to Draw the Flag

  1. Study the flag of Afghanistan and decide how you will go about rendering it. The flag is beautifully complex and can only be drawn by paying close attention to details, then executing them carefully.
    • The flag has a background of three vertical bands – black, red, and green.
    • Upon this field is centred an emblem of white consisting of:
      • A wreath made of two sheaves of wheat crop wrapped in ribbon with a bow at the bottom.
      • A mosque in the center of the wreath flanked by two flags.
      • Four sets of Arabic text called the "Shahada", above and below the mosque.
    • If you prefer, you can draw the emblem first, then color in the tricolor background.
  2. Settle on the approach you are going to use. Making the white emblem is the hardest part and you will need to carefully consider how you will create it.
    • You can color the bands of black, red, and green, then paint the emblem with a white gel pen, water color, correction pen, or something similar.
    • Alternatively, you can draw the emblem, then cut it out and stick it on another sheet upon which you coloured the bands.

Drawing the Background (Field)

  1. Determine the dimensions of the flag. The flag is approximately 7/11 as high as it is wide. If the flag you want to draw is 18cm wide, it should be 11-12cm high.
  2. Draw the outline of the flag. Keep the flag height and width in proportion.
  3. Figure out the width of the bands. The width of the three vertical bands is equal and their size will determine the size of the emblem. If the bands are narrow, the size of the emblem will be reduced proportionately.
    • Measure the breadth (width) of the flag with a ruler. To get the width of the bands, divide the breadth by 3. For example, if your flag is to be 18cm wide, make three equal bands each 6cm wide.
  4. Draw guidelines for the vertical bands. Measure and mark the top and bottom of each guideline, then use a ruler to join the two marks.
  5. Color the vertical bands.
    • The black band on the left symbolises the painful past of Afghanistan.
    • The red band in the middle symbolises the bloodshed of those who died for their freedom.
    • The green band on the right represents hopes for peace in the future.

Making the Emblem

  1. Make guiding dots. At the approximate center of the middle band, make a small dot followed by two dots above and beneath the central one.
    • These three dots mark the borderline for the beginning, the middle and the end of the emblem.
  2. Mark the placement for the wheat shaves. Make double marks on either side of the central or the reb band.
    • These mark the approximate area the sheaves will take.
  3. Make a few curved lines. On the red band, make two curved lines over the lower dot you made. This is for the scroll. On the scroll you will write Arabic text.
    • Make a curved line on the above dot as well. That's where you will write the 'Shahada'.
  4. Make fingerlike shapes. On the two lines of the scroll, draw a fingerlike shape at the center. And draw similar shapes on its left and right side. They will be nine altogether.
    • Its size will diminish as it reaches the end.
  5. Make flowerlike shapes. On the scroll, make two layers of curvy lines with four arcs.
  6. Make three lines. Leave some space after the curvy lines for some more words to be written. Make three, small horizontal lines and close them at both ends with curved lines.
    • Make sure you leave enough space at the end of these lines and the overall red band's borders for the wheat sheaves. If the lines are too long, you can shorten them now to maintain the right proportion of each detail.
    • You can mark the space with an 'x' on both sides.
  7. Begin with the pillar. Make the shape of upside down cups on both sides of the three lines you made. Make two small boxes on top of the two pillars. This is the design if the pillar. The more you pay attention now, the better it will look in the end.
  8. Entend the pillar. Make two more boxes and then draw the pillar a bit more long.
    • On the pillars, draw two more small boxes. These boxes are shaped bigger on top.
  9. Complete the pillars. Draw two more rectangles on the pillars and make smaller rectangles inside them.
  10. Add horizontal lines. Over the pillars, draw five horizontal lines and close them at the left the right side respectively.
    • Make These lines getting longer as it goes up. The lowest one has to be the shortest.
  11. Make the dome. Make a dome on top of the slabs. Make sure the dome begins and ends in line with the position of the pillars. Make four, small horizontal lines on this dome and closed them at the sides.
    • The first line i.e, the one touching the dome need not stand out.
  12. Make the shape of a water drop. Visually understand the center of the horizontal lines you made and make a drop like shape a little over it. The more at the center it is, the better the dome will appear.
    • Make a small oval underneath the teardrop shape.
    • You can choose to draw the dome first and then the drop if you prefer.
  13. Make the dome. Lightly make one side of the dome. Try to match the other side with the first one. This is very important because it's the top of the holy mosque and it adds tremendously to its splendour.
    • Make it bulge at the bottom and go narrow as it reaches up.
    • Make sure that at this point you see the curved line you made on top for the text. If not, erase or adjust the portions accordingly.
  14. Make a slanting line. Reach the bottom left of the mosque and draw a small slanting line.
  15. Complete the side. Continue the line till the top as per the shape already made.
  16. Make the flags. Starting at the box of the pillar, make two slanting lines for the flag. Add a small circle on top of it. Make sure this flag begins and ends in the right place as per the mosque. It ends right near the beginning of the first dome. Repeat the same on the other side to make an identical flag.
    • The flag is waving. So make it have an uneven wave to it.
    • Add three lines or bands on the flag as is in the main flag.
  17. Make pillars near the dome. Make two pillars on both the sides of the dome.
    • Make three lines inside the pillars.
    • The height of the pillars is shorter than the tip of the dome. Keep its height in check as you draw.
    • Make thick ovals on top of it. These ovals are broader than the width of the pillar.
    • Make one more rather flatter oval atop the one below.
  18. Make domes. Make pointed domes on top of the pillars
    • Inside the tip of these domes, make two lines.
  19. Make rays above the mosque. Just between the curved line reserved for the text above and the tip of the mosque, draw a curved line or an arc and make 19 rays on it. Start with a longer ray and alternately add shorter rays between them. The first, the mid and the last one are longer.
  20. Make an outline of the entrance of the mosque. Draw a slanting line at the bottom right of the mosque's right pillar. Take it upwards and cover the entire arch therein.
  21. Make tiles. Make slanting lines for the tiles. Make vertical lines on top of it to complete it.
  22. Draw the Mihrab. The Mihrab is holy because it indicates the Qibla or the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca Masjid. Draw it with a rectangular box over the tiles.
  23. Complete the Mihrab. Add a wavy line on top of the rectangular shape.
  24. Draw the Minbar. Right next to the Mihrab, draw two small pillars such as those near the dome. These pillars need not appear too clear as they are inside the small mosque in the emblem. Depending upon the total area in the mosue, you may make it just about visible to very clear. The Minbar or the pulpit in a mosque is where the Imam and or the speaker position themselves.
  25. Draw steps. Draw zigzag lines at the ends of the tiles to make it appear like steps. Divide the steps by making lines on it.
  26. Write below the mosque. Below the mosque, the alphanumeric text translates to Hijri year 1298. Draw it by making a big 'U' and rotated '3' together. Put three dots on the letter 3. Draw a slanting letter 'Q' followed by a slightly titled '1', 'Y', a flipped 'P' and lastly an upside down 'V'.
  27. Draw the scroll. Cover the open ends of the scroll and make the shape of the number 8 beneath it.
  28. Extend the scroll. Make two ovals beneath the numeral eight and then further extend them on both sides.
  29. Make end of the scroll. Draw another line on the extension and end the scroll in the shape of the letter 'V'.
    • Make sure to extend this scroll only as much as to reach the borders of the red band on the flag.
  30. Write on the scroll. Write أفغانستان which is the Arabic word for Afghanistan, on the scroll below the mosque.
  31. Make two leaflike structure at the top end of the scroll. Add two lines under it. Repeat it in the other side as well.
  32. Make guidelines for the sheaves. Make four curved lines on either side of the mosque.
  33. Make the sheaves. Make oval shapes on either side of each guideline.
    • The guidelines have to pass through the outside band or the band next to the red one.
    • Stop the wheat sheaves on top when it reaches the border of the red band.
  34. Fasten the crop. Make double lines rolled over the crop. Make three patches of these. End the uppermost patch in 'V' shape.
    • Draw them and erase the wheat made in that area.
  35. Draw an extension on the middle patch. Have a small string like extension on the outer side of the middle patch. Repeat the same and draw the sheaves on the other side.
  36. Write the Shahada. Write لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا ٱلله مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱلله on top where you left space for the Shahada. This line translates to, "There is no god but God. Muhammad is the messenger of God". This is the Islamic creed.
  37. Write the Takbir. Write or draw الله أكبر below the Shahada. It means, 'God is Great' in Arabic.
  38. Colour the flag. Colour the first band of the flag with black. Colour the second band red and the last with green. You can make the outline of the emblem with a golden pen if you like.

Tips

  • Draw a creative flag. You can pick a non-rectangular shape for the flag. Just make the flag exactly as it is, and then alter the borders to be circular, oval, or like the waving flag with a fold on it. Different shapes can be used for projects or other presentations.
  • Use a light pencil or don't press the pencil too much if you tend to make more errors while drawing or if your hands are shaky. It is easier to erase light lines than very heavy ones.
