Autumn, also known as fall denotes the transition from summer to winter. For some geographical areas, autumn is the time of year when trees and other vegetation shed leaves. While the leaves will decompose if left on the ground, you may prefer to cleanup a yard and dispose of autumn leaves.

Steps

  1. Call your town hall and ask about an autumn cleanup policy. Find out how to dispose of leaves and other backyard waste. Some county and city officials have specific regulations for you to follow when you cleanup a yard.
    • In some towns you simply bag your leaves and put the bags at the curb so a designated party can pick them up on a specific day of the week. Other areas rake leaves into the street gutter and leaf collectors drive down each side of the road to collect them.
  2. Use your compost to dispose of leaves. This is an earth-friendly way to cleanup a yard. You can use the decomposed leaves to fertilize your garden in the spring.
  3. Mow your lawn after the leaves fall off the trees. Collect the leaves in a bag attachment and dispose of them. You may have to repeat this process a couple of times.
  4. Mulch the leaves into small pieces with your mower. When you cleanup a yard like this, you will leave the small pieces on the lawn to work their way into the soil. Mulched leaves will enrich your soil in the spring.
  5. Gather your leaves into piles with a leaf blower. Pick up the piles and dispose of leaves according to your town hall's instruction.
  6. Cleanup a yard with a leaf vacuum and bags and dispose of leaves appropriately.
  7. Rake leaves into piles. If you own property behind your house or live in the country and own a wooded area, cart them off to the woods or a secluded piece of property far enough away from the yard to prevent them from blowing back into your yard.
  8. Burn your autumn leaves, if you live in an area that permits this. You may need a fire permit to dispose of leaves in this way. Some states and towns require a member of the fire department to be present for the duration of the fire, while others require you to notify the fire department in advance.
  9. Be ready to cleanup a yard. Decide which method of cleanup works best for you and make sure you have the correct tools for the job.

Tips

  • Choose a calm day to dispose of leaves, so they don't blow all over the yard.

Warnings

  • If you plan to burn leaves when you cleanup a yard, make sure you have a metal screen and an enclosed bin or other fire safety equipment. Failing to contain the fire may allow burning debris to blow into wooded areas, yards or other flammable places.
  • In some areas, leaf litter can become a breeding ground for critters and bugs, including mites. If you have animals or children who will be playing outside, you may want to dispose of leaves quickly.
  • If you do not cleanup a yard in autumn, you may need to do additional work in the spring.
