Defragging your computer can help speed up its performance by rearranging and better utilizing the extra space on your computer's hard drive. Computers with newer operating systems such as Mac OS X and Windows 8 will defrag your computer automatically, whereas older operating systems such as Windows XP will require you to defrag your computer manually. Follow the steps below to learn how to defrag your computer manually, or to modify the automatic defrag schedule.

Defrag in Windows 7 and Windows 8

  1. Click on the "Start" menu, then select "All Programs."
  2. Open "Accessories," then click on "System Tools."
  3. Select "Disk Defragmenter."
  4. Highlight the disk drive you want defragged. For example, if you want your computer's main hard drive defragged, then highlight "(C:)."
  5. Click on "Analyze Disk." Your computer will analyze the disk drive to determine whether a defrag is recommended at that time.
  6. Click on "Defragment Disk" if your computer instructs you to continue with the manual defrag.
  7. Wait for your computer to defrag. The defrag process can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours to complete depending on the state of your disk drive.
  8. Click on "Turn on schedule" when Disk Defragmenter has stopped running.
  9. Verify that a checkmark is displayed next to "Run on a schedule."
  10. Specify the frequency, date, and time at which you'd like your computer to automatically defrag itself going forward.
  11. Click on "OK," then click on the button labeled "Close." Your computer will exit from Disk Defragmenter, and defrag your computer automatically at the frequency, date, and time you specified.

Defrag in Windows XP

  1. Click on "Start," then click on "My Computer."
  2. Point to "Local Disk," then right-click and select "Properties" from the floating menu.
  3. Click on the tab labeled "Tools," then click on "Defragment Now." Disk Defragmenter will open on your desktop.
  4. Select the disk drive you want defragged, then click on "Analyze." Your computer will analyze that disk drive's files and folders to determine whether a defrag is necessary.
  5. Click on "Defragment." Your computer will then take up to several minutes or several hours to defrag the disk drive, depending on the state of your computer.
  6. Click on "Close" to exit Disk Defragmenter.

Tips

  • For users with Windows Vista, your computer will automatically defrag itself on a weekly basis. If you want to change the time or date at which Windows Vista runs Disk Defragmenter, modify the schedule by following the steps outlined in this article under "Method One: Defrag in Windows 7 and Windows 8."

Warnings

  • If your computer is not turned on during the scheduled defrag time, your computer will not run Disk Defragmenter. Make sure you leave your computer on during its scheduled defrag time so your computer can defrag itself automatically.
  • If your computer resides on a domain, you may need to enter the administrator password in order to run Disk Defragmenter. Consult with your domain's network administrator to obtain the necessary password prior to attempting a manual defrag.
