It can be frustrating to look for medicine or other supplies in your bathroom and come across expired items or not find what you’re looking for. It can cause serious consequences if you happen to grab a medication without knowing that it has expired. Keeping your medicine cabinet organized will make it easier to find what you need and keep the cabinet a safer place for your family.

Clean Out All Expired or Old Items

  1. Look at all medications for expiration dates. If you cannot find an expiration date on the bottle, throw it away.
  2. Throw away all prescription medicines that were not used. Crush medications and mix them with an inedible substance, such as kitty litter or coffee grounds before discarding. If you are in doubt how to dispose of your expired medication, ask your pharmacist.
  3. Throw away other items like band-aids, ointments and creams, and other first aid supplies that are expired or look old or damaged.

Remove Unrelated Items from your Medicine Cabinet

  1. Find another place to store shampoos, soaps, makeup, and other items.
    • If you have space in your shower area, store your body soaps and shampoos there.
    • If you have a storage closet or cupboard in your home where you keep extra towels, you can also put extra soaps and cosmetics that you don’t use on a daily basis.
    • Keep makeup in makeup cases and store it under your bathroom sink or on a shelf in the bathroom.
  2. Place any non-medical items that must be kept in the medicine cabinet on a separate shelf of the cabinet.

Organize Your Medicines

  1. Place similar medicines together. For example, if you use different types of anti-itch creams, keep them together on one part of a shelf. Over-the-counter medicines, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, should also be kept together so that they’re easier to find when you need them.
  2. Keep medications for each person grouped together so that prescription drugs are not mixed up.

Tips

  • A good reason to keep your medicine cabinet organized is that it helps you keep medicine out of reach from children.
  • Get creative to find storage options in a medicine cabinet. Use cups or plastic organizers to hold small items. This is also helpful with tubes that take up a lot of room when they are lying down.
  • Keep a pad and paper taped to the inside of the medicine cabinet to list things that need to be replaced. You can also get a small erasable board to use instead of paper if you prefer.
  • Mark the date you purchased your items on the bottom of each bottle or on each tube. This way, you know when to throw them out.

Warnings

  • Keep adult medicine away from children. If you take medicine that is particularly dangerous, such as pain medication, store it in a locked cabinet.
