With literally thousands of corn mazes around the U.S., everyone is running around lost in corn fields. Here is what you need to look like a pro.

Steps

  1. Before you enter the maze, know where you will be exiting. Take note of any tall objects such as trees, buildings, or roads, which will produce noise.
  2. If you are provided with a map, take a quick glance at it before you walk in. Even if you do not want to use it while trying to navigate the maze, if you have a rough idea where you need to go, you will not end up wandering in the wrong direction.
  3. While you walk through, be sure to carefully note where you are. Remember intersections, turns, and checkpoints in the maze so you do not walk down the same path twice.
  4. If you get completely lost, follow the little kids. They seem to have a strange inborn sense of which way to go.

Tips

  • If you happen to get lost, put one hand on the right side wall and don't take your hand off of it. If you find you have returned to a particular spot, put your hand on the other wall and repeat the process. You might take awhile, but you'll find your way out.
  • As with any maze, if consistently take either the right or left hand turns, you will eventually find a way out. Running your finger long the wall of the maze without lifting it will keep you on the right track.
  • Make sure you know when the maze is open. Hours can vary from one farm to the next.
  • If given a map, use a pencil to follow the trails you pass so you know which way to go, or even how to get out of a trap.

Warnings

  • Make sure you've got some time to devote to this. Corn mazes can take an amazing length of time.
  • Never allow children under age 13 to enter without an adult. Some mazes may require adults to accompany children of various age limits.

Things You'll Need

  • Good walking shoes.
  • Appropriate clothing. (Remember, you will be walking through a cornfield.)
  • Water. Walking will make you thirsty, especially if it is a hot day.
  • Bug spray.
  • Sun screen.
  • Flashlight, if you will be visiting at night. Some mazes will sell these also, and others will not even allow visitors after dark. Be sure to check hours before you go.
  • Watch. It is always fun to see how long it takes.
  • 2-way radios. Not necessary, but can be fun so your group can split up, or in case you get split up.
  • Food and picnic lunches can make the day extended and more enjoyable. Again, check on the policies of the farm you are visiting since some will not allow carry in food. Also, keep the over 21 drinks at home. Mazes are meant to be family establishments and other visitors want to get the full experience too.
  • A readiness to get lost!!
