You're watching MTV and suddenly see a rock star on screen for a few minutes, before pop takes over the station again. You think to yourself, "I wish I could be a rock star like them." This guide will help you along your journey to stardom, and hopefully, you'll reach your dreams. It can be a great journey and a lot of fun so take your time and enjoy the ride!

Steps

  1. Learn how to play an instrument or take vocal lessons. There are many instruments to choose from the most common ones being the guitar and the drums. Learning bass can prove fruitful as well. If you are planning to start an alternative rock band you can even consider piano or the turntables.
  2. Put together a band. Really, unless you're planning to be a solo artist put together a band. Get people who can actually sing or play an instrument well too, Even if you're planning on going solo you still need someone to play the other instruments or sing backup.
  3. Practice, practice, practice! Keep believing in yourself. If you lose hope in your talents, you'll never make it anywhere. Sometimes you think you lost your talent, but you should just take a rest and come back later to try again.Dream what you want to be. Imagine yourself playing one of your songs at rock am ring in front of your fans.
  4. Write your music and make it something you like. Writing constantly is the key. Practice makes perfect.
  5. Record some of your music, after you've memorized the lyrics/notes by heart. It's a good idea to make a CD with your tracks.
  6. Allow your closest friends to listen and consider your music
  7. Let a group of people listen to your music after you've made changes. Watch their expressions. If there's a lot of concerned faces and shaking of heads, tweak a little more of your tunes.
  8. Play at gigs. Sometimes they're hard to get but you need for the live entertainment experience. This is the most crucial part. The idea is to get as many gigs as possible. Visiting or phoning hundreds of pubs for two weeks straight to get as many gigs packed in as possible is very important. Also playing day after day in front of a large audience will have your performing talents skyrocket.
  9. Save your money wisely, and don't quit your full time job or get a part time job. Now it begins.
  10. Create a band/artist website featuring pictures, your show calendar, and previous employers for other pubs to see will give you a leg up.
  11. Hand out CDs of your music to people you know/meet, or even to strangers, this might help you get more fans and/or get a record deal.
  12. Record your band's music on a video and upload it on Youtube. Make sure the video is "cool" and will appeal to many people.
  13. Tell your friends to recommend your music to as many people as possible; the effect will snowball, and you may have an even larger fan base.
  14. Never ever give up, even when it seems like you are not getting anywhere; you can't call it quits. Because then you would be a quitter, and rock stars aren't quitters as quitters don't rock.
  15. Love it: It ultimately is key to love what you do in life, especially if it is your career. Don't ever lose sight of the initial reason that led you to become a rock star in the first place.
  16. Try to compose your own type of song. Every genre has different ways. Rock is 1 genre but rock stars tend to stretch it out a little bit by putting their feelings, different notes, different patterns, etc. Copying other rock stars is uncool .Don't worry if your music sounds different than any normal kind of song. Its better to be totally different than to be totally the same.

Tips

  • Being a rock star isn't just having leather jeans and going out late at night. It is about making music for what you believe in.
  • It will be very hard, painful, and discouraging before it starts to pay off. Make sure you love the music, the creative process, and the direction you are going, and eventually your material will start to reflect your passion and you will be taken seriously by a wider audience.
  • It's important to be entertaining and exciting. And the idea is to have the venue owner having more money in the tills at the end of the night because of you being there. Express these ideas when you're trying to book shows.
  • do not consider yourself too young or old for music.it has no age limits
  • Every rock star has failed many, many times. The only difference is that they didn't give up.
  • never give up because people did not like your music.Instead bring out something that appeals at the same time conveying the message you want to give.
  • Be patient!! These things take time.
  • Make a simple website for your band and advertise it on there. Add some videos of your band.
  • Remember this won't happen overnight; you need to practice a lot and get your exposure off the charts.
  • If you do all this, your dream is can be possible, but remember you could be just as good as some famous musician but get nowhere. It's all about meeting the right people at the right time.
  • Become familiar with the pubs and bars around your area and beyond and if you can see yourself playing there. When you desire to play at a place, make it a goal. Not that you hope they book you, but you will being playing there because you're a professional musician.
  • Make sure you enjoy the work early on. It takes a lot of work to make it huge, but once you're a rock star all of your problems will get larger, and you will be working ten times as hard. This won't be a problem if you love what you're doing and you believe in yourself.
  • Spend most of your practice time songwriting as being a good songwriter will get you further than being a good player.
  • Don't take no for an answer. The only time you quit perusing a venue is when they tell you to stop approaching them. If they haven't said that, they are just saying you haven't convinced them YET, and they're giving you another opportunity. They will have a bag full of excuses. Eliminate those excuses, by giving them every reason why you should play there.
  • Never play gigs for free. If you want to be recognized as professional and make a living, it's crucial you express that. The industry standard is different all over, but in general, a front man should be making $150 for a four hour set starting off at any pub. Any and each extra band mate should be receiving $100 on top of that. If it's too much, discuss a price the venue would be comfortable with, but don't wiggle too much, as that is how low you should go ever. Don't be a scab. Not even the artist at Woodstock played for free ever.
  • When writing songs, try to focus more on perfection than completion!
  • A good way to get gigs is to meet bands and support your local scene. A little helpfulness can go a long way. Or if you were allowed to perform in the end of year concerts that way people will be more aware of you and your band.
  • It's much harder to make it big in a band than it is to try to become a one-man show; you want to be self sufficient as a front man without needing a band.
  • Remember you can never fail a song too many times. if you write and you think it's not good keep trying, consider getting ideas from people or things around you.
  • If you are writing a song, listen to some rock music for inspiration. If you can't think of ideas, don't push it. Come back to it later. Music sounds much better when it comes with full-force and natural imagination. If you have an idea for a song, write it down so you don't forget it! You never know, it could be the next best seller!
  • Don't push yourself that much. If you do, you could end up being a bad singer or player.

Warnings

  • Don't start out playing just to become a 'Rock star'. If you don't have the love and passion for music to play for nothing somewhere just to know that you are spreading some good tunes, then just back out and be a roadie or something.
  • Don't just stop playing music if the rock star attempt doesn't work out. Music can fill your free time, and anyway, if you keep trying, you'll get noticed sooner or later.
  • Know your Limits: Take proper care of yourself; don't work 24/7, get proper sleep and take time out and don't over-exert yourself.
  • Being a Rock star is NOT about doing drugs. True, some of the greats of Rock have done drugs numerous times. But just because they did doesn't mean 1. That you have to, or 2. That is because you're high means you'll write great music.

Things You'll Need

  • An audience. Even a little crowd can make your dreams come true. If not many people show up, don't worry. Worrying can cause stress and can make you play rubbish, which can lead to embarrassment. Just remember, whether it's just one or two people or a full house, play your best and have fun.
