Dungeoneering is one of the most recent skills on RuneScape, released on 12 April 2010. Dungeoneering is available to free players and paying players alike, although non-members cannot access all the features. This skill is trained by raiding the dungeon floors below a huge castle called Daemonheim to gain experience. Read on for instructions on how to start training this skill, but please note that this article contains spoilers.

Steps

  1. Travel to Daemonheim. There are a few ways to do this. You can travel via the Daemonheim ferry located west of the Al Kharid bank (the boat ride is free), or you can travel on foot up the east coast of the Wilderness until you get there. Once you receive a Ring of Kinship, you can also use it to teleport there.
  2. Speak to the Dungeoneering tutor. You will obtain a Ring of Kinship, which allows you to teleport to Daemonheim and form Dungeoneering parties. The tutor can also explain more about Dungeoneering, and even share some information on Daemonheim and its past.
  3. Speak to the Fremennik banker standing in front of the castle. You need to bank all your items before you can enter Daemonheim, except the Ring of Kinship and an Orb of Oculus, if you have one. Don't worry, weapons and armour will be provided inside the dungeon.
  4. Enter the Daemonheim castle. It is advisable to wear your Ring of Kinship to save inventory space. At this point, you can form a party. There are two ways to raid a dungeon: in a party or solo.
    • To raid solo:
      • Right-click the Ring of Kinship.
      • Click on "Open party interface".
      • Click on "Form Party".
      • Choose a floor (if this is your first time, only floor 1 will be available).
      • Choose a complexity (if this is your first time, only complexity 1 will be available).
    • To raid in a party:
      • Right-click the Ring of Kinship.
      • Click on "Open party interface".
      • Click on "Form Party". Alternatively, you could ask to join someone else's party.
      • Invite other players to join your party. Try to recruit players that are in your combat level range. It also helps if they can access the same floors as you can.
      • Choose a floor (you can only choose floors available to all players in your party).
      • Choose a complexity (you can only choose a complexity available to all players in your party).
  5. Climb down the dungeon ladder. There are two: They are located on the left and right hand sides if you face north and are just beyond the door to the castle. Once you have climbed down, you will find yourself in a room with various decorations and objects, and the Smuggler will be in the center. Items will be scattered on the tables, which are located in one corner of the room. Depending on the complexity you have chosen, there should be various kinds of food and equipment lying around.
  6. Take whatever you need, and equip any of the weapons or armor you find. Keep the food close at hand, as it can heal you during combat. If you are on complexity 2 or higher, you can buy or sell items to the Smuggler. Be sure to pick up any coloured keys lying on the floor, as these are used to open certain doors.
  7. Enter the dungeon rooms through any of the doors from the starting room. Most monsters in Daemonheim are aggressive and will attack you. Pick up any keys you find lying around, and collect the useful items that the monsters have dropped.
  8. Continue through the rest of the catacomb-like dungeon. The number of rooms you will have to work through depends on the size of your party and whether you have chosen to raid a small, medium, or large dungeon. Be sure to fight all the monsters you can, because fighting counts towards your Dungeoneering Prestige. It is advisable not to run away from a battle.
  9. Use the Daemonheim map (located beneath your mini-map) to see any rooms you have not unlocked yet. Remember to turn your camera north first, before opening the map, or else the map will be very confusing. The boss monster room (if you have unlocked it yet) will be indicated with a skull symbol. If you do not raid all the rooms in each dungeon, you will receive less experience at the end.
  10. Finish all the rooms before venturing into the boss room. Take plenty of food (preferably short-finned eels or giant flatfish) with you. Once you reach complexity 2, you can fish inside Daemonheim. Once you defeat the boss monster, climb up the ladder at the end of the room to finish the raid.
  11. Look at how much experience you have received. A pop-up will appear on your screen, tallying up your xp. When it has finished counting, you will be awarded a number of tokens. The number of tokens you receive is equivalent to one tenth of the xp you receive (rounding down). You can exchange these tokens for rewards with the Rewards Trader outside Daemonheim.

Tips

  • You will find it easier to train Dungeoneering as a non-member if you already have all your other skills trained to level 50 and above. Even with high levels you will still find that you cannot open some doors because you need more skills. If you cannot open a door, it means you will receive less experience at the end of the raid.
  • Try to get through as many rooms as possible, even if they aren't required. This gives you more experience.
  • Try to get players lower than your own level in a party. The monsters may be a little less powerful.
  • In order to open doors and collect/modify resources, you may need a hammer, a novite pickaxe (or better), a novite hatchet (or better), and a tinderbox. Keep these items with you at all times.
  • Although it is only a last resort, you may die a lot of times. Although it has an EXP penalty, it doesn't take away any items like the real RuneScape world.
  • Remember that you can use the Home Teleport in your spellbook at any time to return to the smuggler. It may be a good idea to create a gate stone before you teleport, as you can get back to your original location much quicker.
  • The first boss monster you will encounter inside Daemonheim will most likely be the "Gluttonous Behemoth". This boss is easy to defeat, because it will have one food source in the room for each member in your party (or just one). If every player stands between the monster and a food source whilst attacking, you will find that it cannot heal between attacks and you will be able to defeat it quickly.
  • Here is a list, outlining the different complexities. With every raid you complete, you will unlock a new complexity, until you reach level 6.
    • Complexity 1: Only combat. Armour and weapons are given. No shop stock.
    • Complexity 2: Combat, Fishing, Woodcutting, Firemaking and Cooking. Armour and weapons are given. Minimal shop stock.
    • Complexity 3: Now also Mining and Smithing weapons and Runecrafting. Only armour is given. Smith your own weapons. Increased shop stock.
    • Complexity 4: Making armour allowed (thus: Crafting). No armour or weapons allocated. More stock in shop.
    • Complexity 5: No F2P skills added. The same as complexity 4 for F2P. Increased shop stock.
    • Complexity 6: No F2P skills added. Full complexity. Make your own equipment. Full shop stock.
  • Items inside Daemonheim are valued according to tiers . Only tiers 1-5 are available to non-members. If you receive an item that you would like to use in every raid, you can bind it to you by right-clicking on it, and selecting "Bind". At level 1 Dungeoneering, you can bind one item and 125 of one type of rune or arrow like this. You will then receive this item again at the beginning of every raid.
  • Bind a new weapon or platebody every time your attack or defense allows you to equip a new one. The best and sometimes only way to get these advanced equipment is to smith it, where you need tons of rusty coins to buy ore, coins you could have bought food or more armor with. Binding advanced and best equipment to yourself saves time and work.
    • If the above can't be done because of a low smithing level, ask someone with a high smithing level, preferably a friend, to make the equipment for you.

Warnings

  • Death is safe inside Daemonheim. You will not lose any items and will be teleported back to the smuggler so that you can enter the dungeon again. However, you will gain less experience for every death you have at the end of the raid.
  • Don't get players higher leveled than you in a party. The higher a level a group member is than you, the stronger the monsters.
  • Remember, the only way to get rid of a bound item is to destroy it. Think before you bind.
  • Don't forget to make food and armor whenever possible. Don't forget to mine ore when it is precious and you come across it.
