Adding music and videos to your iPhone can help provide hours of entertainment while you’re on the go. Getting iTunes to successfully transfer your files can be difficult though, so follow this guide to get your media on your phone.

Adding Files to Your iTunes Library

  1. Download iTunes if necessary. It is free and you can obtain it from the Apple website. iTunes is required to transfer media files to iPhones and iPads. If you have an older computer, make sure it meets the requirements.
    • There are third-party programs that can transfer your files as well. Programs like iFunBox will allow you to transfer files without the use of iTunes.
    • If you have never used iTunes before, you may want to read this manual on how to use iTunes.
  2. Add music to your iTunes library. You can add music to your iTunes library by importing songs off a CD, purchasing music from the iTunes music store, or by adding songs already on your computer.
    • iTunes supports MP3 and AAC files.
  3. Add your videos to your iTunes library. In order to transfer your videos to your phone, you will need to import them into iTunes.
  4. Connect your iPhone to your computer. Use the USB cable that came with your iPhone. iTunes should recognize it immediately and it will appear in the Devices section of iTunes.
    • If iTunes does not recognize your iPhone, you may need to restore it.
  5. Set your sync preferences. After connecting, the iPhone should be listed in the Devices section. Click on it to open the Summary window. Scroll to the bottom to see your basic sync settings. These settings will affect syncing for both music and video.

Adding Music to Your iPhone

  1. Insert your SD card into your new computer. Drag all the audio files to the iTunes screen. Right-click and click consolidate. This will automatically fill your iTunes program with all your purchased songs. When you changed devices your previous purchase may not be included in your new computer.
  2. Connect your iPhone SYNC, remember to click on the auto-refill section and replace a copy. Disable your device from having duplicates.
  3. Set what music to sync. Select your iPhone in the Devices menu. At the top of the iTunes window, click the Music tab. Check the box next to Sync Music, and select whether you would like your entire library synced or only the playlists that you specify.
    • Syncing will remove the content that is currently on your iPhone. To manually select your music, see the next section.
    • Your sync options may vary depending on your iPhone model.
  4. Wait for the sync to complete. Once you’ve made your choices, click the Apply button to start the sync. The amount of time this will take depends on how much music you are transferring. You can check the progress in the iTunes display.
  5. Disconnect your iPhone. Once the sync is complete, select your iPhone in the Devices menu. Click the Eject button that appears next to the device name. Once the iPhone has successfully ejected, you can disconnect it from the computer.

Adding Video Files to Your iPhone

  1. Convert videos to an iPhone supported format. Videos purchased through the iTunes store are automatically converted into the proper format for your iPhone. Only the iPhone 4 and later can play HD video. All videos must be 30 frames per second. The iPhone supports the following file formats:
    • .mov
    • .mp4
    • .3gp
    • .m4v
  2. Set what videos to sync. Select your iPhone in the Devices menu. Videos in your library will be in two different sections: Movies and TV Shows.
    • In the Movies tab, check the box for “Sync movies”. You will be given three options. You can sync all of your movies in your library, your unwatched movies, or specific movies that you select.
    • In the TV Shows tab, select the box for “Sync TV shows”. This will allow you to choose your sync options, such as unwatched shows or your entire library.
  3. Wait for the sync to complete. Once you’ve made your choices, click the Apply button to start the sync. The amount of time this will take depends on how much music you are transferring. You can check the progress in the iTunes display.
  4. Disconnect your iPod. Once the sync is complete, select your iPod in the Devices menu. Click the Eject button that appears next to the device name. Once the iPod has successfully ejected, you can disconnect it from the computer.

Adding YouTube Videos

  1. Open the video you want to download in YouTube. Copy the URL from your browser’s address bar.
  2. Go to a YouTube download site. KeepVid is one of the more popular options. Paste the video’s URL into the text field and click Download.
    • Be sure that you do not click any of the advertisements designed to look like a download button. The download button is typically smaller than the advertisements, and is located right next to the text field.
    • Downloading YouTube videos violates YouTube’s terms of service.
  3. Download the video in MP4 format. Any of the other video formats will not work with the iPhone. If you are using an iPhone 3GS or earlier, you cannot view any video higher than 480P.
    • You can download the video into MP3 format if you just want the audio on your phone. This is very useful with music videos.
  4. Place the file into your iTunes library. Once the file has downloaded, you will need to add it to your iTunes library so that it can be synced to your iPhone. Open iTunes and drag the file into the iTunes window to add it to the library.
  5. Sync the file. Follow the steps in the previous section to sync the file.
