Do you love to write books, or is this your first time writing a book? No matter the case, you came to the right article. Getting an idea for a book might take a while, but these few steps can give you a head start as a young writer. Try them!

Turning your ideas into writing

  1. Write a book with just about anything. You can observe while swimming in a river or pool, at a friend’s house, or when something really fishy is going on- just don’t get into anyone’s personal business. For example, you can write about your Aunt Edna: Aunt Edna was always acting private. She wouldn’t let her daughter into her workroom, her dog in the house- she won’t even let her own husband in her room! That’s when Harry McCoy found out: his sweet, mysterious, secretive Aunt Edna was a CIA agent.
  2. Maybe you don’t want to investigate. You could maybe just relax, do everyday stuff, and just let the idea pop up in your mind one day. Do the first step if you need to write right away.
  3. Brainstorm. How do you think your favorite author gets her/his ideas? Become a detective looking for clues, a shopper searching for ham, or an old lady trying to find her glasses. Use your imagination and let your creativity flow. If you are writing a fantasy book, you can think of a character like a dragon named Mongo, or a creature’s species is a Grumaton- a creature with five tails, six fangs, eleven arms, and twenty-one legs! Be creative, that’s the whole point!
  4. Write about something that you love. If you love to swim, you could go for a swim, and while you are swimming, you could think about how to incorporate your love of swimming into a story. Maybe the main character of the book loves to swim, or the story could take place at a swimming pool . . . Try it out, and be creative! You never know what you can come up with!
  5. If you start to have an idea of what you would like to write, ask yourself questions! What if...? How would this happen? Does that make sense? Where would that happen? Write down lots of answers and choose your favorite!

Free writing

  1. Gather your ideas together in your head. Write them down on paper in dot point form if that helps you to visualize them and play around with them.
  2. Start writing without having a plan. Simply write whatever comes to your mind, being inspired by the ideas.
  3. Keep writing until you don't feel much like it. Then stop. Take a break from the work.
  4. Come back later. Read through the work. Now get to editing it and shaping it into a real piece of writing. From the first tidy-up, things should start getting a lot easier and you'll soon be in the flow.

Tips

  • Try to make your story original think of some unique objects or activities. You want to entertain the reader and motivate the reader to keep reading.
  • Don`t forget to make it interesting and use a lot of adjectives! Make it funny, adventurous or reality!
  • Stay motivated and always watch for something that you could write about!
  • The ideas that normally take the longest to pop in your head are normally the best ones.
  • Just be yourself and don't ever worry if your readers will like your book.
  • A great way to start writing is to base a story off a dream you had. Alternatively, write about your own life and experiences.
  • Make an idea box. Put intro, body, and conclusion in the idea box. Then put all of your ideas in there.
  • If you are really stuck, a great thing to do is to take a blank paper and put ten lines on the paper. Go to your friends, parents, grandma and grandpa, and ask each person to tell you a word that goes well with "where," "who," and "how."
  • A good idea to enhance your writing skills is to take a book or a few by your favourite author, and then analyze their writing and try to find out patterns that they use. Then take your favourite book by that author and try to write a sequel. Try to write it using the author's style of writing. It is a good exercise to get to know your own personal writing style and also is good practice for developing characters and settings and also a captivating plot line. Who cares that it can't be published because it is kind of like plagiarism? No one other than you has to read it, and it is fun!
  • Frequently write in a journal or diary. This could exercise your writing, with the possibility of gaining ideas on what you could write about.
  • Always be creative. If you are writing a nonfiction story, don't be boring. Yes, you may only want to keep important details, but if you want your readers to be entertained, add in some of those fun "side" facts.
  • Don't be afraid to write something crazy! Something no one has ever seen before, people will like it, and maybe you'll start a trend!

Warnings

  • Don't copy what someone else has already written. Electronic checks will match copied work with ease, plus readers are not daft and notice copying quickly. By all means be inspired but avoid being a copycat.

Things You'll Need

  • A notebook /computer with word processor
  • A pen or pencil
  • A scratch notebook (to jot down ideas)
  • An imagination
