When packing for travel, you should reduce wrinkles as much as possible to avoid ironing everything again when you reach your destination. Packing dress shirts should be done carefully by wrapping them around folded t-shirts. Try this three-step process on your next business trip.

Folding T-shirts

  1. Find a large, clean table on which you can fold your shirts.
  2. Smooth out your t-shirt with the front facing down.
  3. Fold the right sleeve and shirt vertically until the edge of the sleeve meets the center of the shirt body.
  4. Repeat, folding the left sleeve and shirt until it meets the right sleeve in the center of the shirt.
  5. Fold the bottom edge up to the top edge. Fold it in half again from the bottom to make it even smaller.
    • If the t-shirt is already a small size, you may not need to fold it twice horizontally. http://pad3.whstatic.com/images/thumb/d/da/Fold-a-Shirt-for-Travel-Step-5Bullet1-Version-2.jpg/550px-Fold-a-Shirt-for-Travel-Step-5Bullet1-Version-2.jpg http://pad2.whstatic.com/images/thumb/d/da/Fold-a-Shirt-for-Travel-Step-5Bullet1-Version-2.jpg/300px-Fold-a-Shirt-for-Travel-Step-5Bullet1-Version-2.jpg /a/ae/Fold a Shirt for Travel Step 5Bullet1.360p.mp4
  6. Flip the folded t-shirt over and set it at the edge of your table.

Folding Dress Shirts

  1. Button up your dress shirt all the way to the top button.
  2. Place it face down on your large table. Smooth it out with the arms to the sides. Take care to remove all wrinkles at each step in the process; any wrinkles that you make now will be very pronounced when you reach your destination.
  3. Fold the right sleeve vertically into the middle of the shirt. The edge of the cuff should be parallel to the edge of the shirt, rather than tilted. Fold it just past the center of the shirt, approximately where the left side of the collar ends.
  4. Repeat with the left sleeve, folding it vertically and placing it over the right sleeve. It should extend to an imaginary line below the right side of the collar. Smooth the sleeves down.
  5. Fold the right side of the shirt in to the center of the back. Grab the shoulder seam and the bottom edge and fold vertically into the middle.
  6. Repeat with the left side. Folding the edge into the center. With fitted shirts, the sides of the shirt will meet at the top of the back, but not necessarily at the bottom.
  7. Fold it in half horizontally once or twice, if you are folding without wrapping your clothes. Skip this step if you plan to wrap shirts in your suitcase to decrease the chance of wrinkles even further.

Wrapping Shirts

  1. Layer the folded t-shirt on top of your dress shirt. Place it over the bottom half of your vertically folded shirt.
  2. Fold the top of the dress shirt down, over the t-shirt. Smooth it out. By wrapping your shirts, they are more likely to stay in place and less likely to cause wrinkles.
  3. Place your socks, underwear and other rolled clothing at the bottom of your suitcase. Then, lay your wrapped shirts in a single layer over them. Alternate them with the collars at different ends if you need to pack them in several layers.

Tips

  • After you pack your wrapped dress shirts in a layer, cover that layer with a dry cleaning bag. The plastic will allow clothes to move without wrinkling while they are being transported.
  • You can also wrap dress pants around folded t-shirts to reduce wrinkles. Smooth out dress pants with a side facing up. Place your t-shirt in the middle and wrap the bottom of the pants up over the t-shirt and the top of the pants down to form a third layer.
