For some of us, smelling nice comes so easily that it seems outrageous for there to be instructions on it. However, we've all experienced standing next to someone who didn't get the memo, and a waft of their unpleasant smell can make you incredibly uncomfortable (even nauseous). While the sense of smell is rather subjective, the following steps will help anyone eradicate what are commonly considered to be unwanted odors.

Steps

  1. Bathe/shower regularly. This will get rid of hormonal odor on your entire body and is essential that you do it daily. If you find this hard to fit into your schedule, try asking a doctor about other procedures. Make sure to wash the problem parts of your body carefully. These parts include the armpits and genitals.
  2. Wear deodorant. Get one with an appealing fragrance. If you sweat a lot get an antiperspirant.
  3. Groom your lower abdomen regularly. This routine may include trimming excess hair buildup and using a body wash. Be sure to reach areas that are prone to soiling or that contact/fold over other skin.
  4. Wear cologne or perfume but don't cover yourself with it. Spray your neck, wrists and back of knees. If you are male spray it on your face but not right after shaving or it will sting.
  5. Be confident. Don't smell your armpits or feel self conscious, be free and open to the world.
  6. Brush your teeth and your tongue. Most bad-breath causing bacteria lives on your tongue. Take your toothbrush and gently brush from the back (as far as you can go without hurting yourself) to the front. You can also buy a tongue scraper designed to scrape off the bacteria like a squeegee. Bad breath can be offensive to others, so brush your teeth twice a day- once in the morning after breakfast and once before you go to bed and take some mint gum to chew after snacks and meals.
  7. Don't wear clothing that will make you sweat, wear layers so you can take one off when you need.
  8. Just remember to bathe or shower daily, use deodorant daily and you'll smell lovely.

Tips

  • Rub a little Vaseline on the area you are going to put perfume on, it'll stay for longer!
  • Spray perfume/cologne on your shoulders so if anyone hugs you, they will smell it.
  • Buy hand or body lotion that smells exactly like your perfume. That way, you don't have to worry about your perfume wearing off and having to re-apply. Also, "layering" lotion and perfume will help the scent last longer.
  • Wear just a touch of cologne; don't overdo it.
  • Vanilla and cinnamon are scents that appeal to many men, so if you are out on a date with one, it can encourage the romantic mood.
  • If you wear sneakers, spray them with deodorant and change socks. You can also add baking soda to kill bacteria that cause a bad odor on your feet.
  • Check your hands after eating food with really strong flavors because the smell can stain your skin. It is not very appealing! You may need to scrub your hands to get rid of it.
  • Apply deodorant or lightly-scented lotion just after showering. This puts moisture back into your skin that your soap may have taken out, and keeps your body sweat-free from the start. Remember to thoroughly dry areas before applying deodorant and shave underarm hair (yes men too).
  • If you wear a shirt, spray some cologne on the collar, but be aware that this can also stain the fabric.
  • Shower daily. But avoid washing your hair everyday.-- Doing so will strip your hair of its natural oils.
  • Use antiperspirants sparingly as they tend to clog your pores and sweat glands.
  • Put cologne on your shoulders, then move around for a bit so the scent stays there.
  • Put perfume on your hand.
  • Use spray deodorant on your feet before putting your socks on. This helps in multiple ways. Your feet will sweat less, your socks will smell fresher, and your shoes will smell better, longer!
  • If you don't want to get your hair wet but want it to look and smell good, you can buy dry shampoo, which comes in all different kinds of fragrances. For example, there's cherry, strawberry and many more to choose from. You can buy dry shampoo from any drugstore, or superstore.
  • Be sure to wash your clothes so you have something clean to wear.
  • Wash your clothes- especially jeans you wear often. Also launder your shoes and sprinkle some baking soda in them. Sometime the stench isn't you but what you are wearing!
  • Take a bath when you wake up in the morning and when you are about to go to bed.
  • Don't put your clothes around some places that might have other odors, like kitchen or be around someone who's smoking, for example.
  • Make sure to apply deodorant before perfume or cologne.
  • After showering wear clean under garments and clothes..... Freshen up more than once a day. Carry perfume or cologne, breath mints, and powder to make your freshness last as long as possible.

Warnings

  • Don't overdo the perfume or cologne, if you choose to wear it. A little goes a long way, and your sense of smell becomes desensitized to the fragrance, so you may not even smell what, to others, is too much. Be aware that some people are highly allergic to fragrances and many more just don't like them, especially in crowded spaces. A good rule of thumb is three sprays for EDPs and five sprays for EDTs.
  • Poor hygiene can lead to health and relationship problems. Take care of your body so your body can take care of you.
  • With antiperspirants, be aware of allergic reactions. The zirconium in "superior odor protection" can cause a reaction, while aluminum-based ones may not, so don't give up completely on antiperspirants if one causes a reaction. Also, do not rely upon your antiperspirant scent for a pleasant smell, as most conflict with other scents or leave you smelling soapy at best. Also, antiperspirants can stain clothing.
  • If you're a woman, it is highly recommended not to douche or use feminine wash products. It upsets the natural balance of the vagina/vulva and can cause infections. Your vagina is a self-cleaning organ and produces its own protective substances. Avoid using talcum powder, strong soaps, sprays and deodorant in the groin area. Washing the external parts of the area daily with a gentle soap will be sufficient if you are healthy, but it's best to just use warm water on the vulva area. Talk to a doctor or gynecologist if you suspect a yeast infection or other problem.
  • A few medical studies have linked aluminum-zirconium deposits with Alzheimer's and cancer. Although this is unproven, be sure to thoroughly wash under your armpits when showering.
  • If you sweat a lot, avoid antiperspirants containing aluminum. Some studies suggest that deodorants with aluminum in them can lead to breast cancer and Alzheimer's disease. They also are linked to fatigue and muscle weakness. There are effective natural deodorants.
