Whether you are a tourist hoping to get two cities into one visit or a commuter looking for a way to get to your new job, it's relatively easy to get from Baltimore to Washington DC, without a fuss. Allowing yourself enough time and being aware of transportation options makes travelling to Washington DC a breeze.

Steps

  1. Allow yourself plenty of time to get where you are going. Delays are quite common, especially during rush hours.
  2. If you're trying to get to Washington on any day of the week, including weekends, the MARC (Maryland Area Regional Commuter) train service is usually the cheapest, most convenient option. MARC trains run on three lines, Brunswick, Camden, and Penn. The Camden line takes you directly between Baltimore, MD and Washington D.C.
    • MARC trains used to only operate Monday through Friday; but as of December 2013, MARC trains now offer weekend service, as well. Weekend service is currently available on the Penn Line only.

  3. Once in Washington, you can use the Washington Metro to get around the D.C. area.

  4. Public transportation is usually very limited during the weekend. Your options would be traveling either by:
    • Amtrak. This is like MARC, but is fairly expensive. Click here to find out more about Amtrak.
    • By car. This may be the most convenient method if you have a car available. See below to find out the best routes to take by car.
  5. It is best to travel by car outside of rush hours. Most highways are very congested during rush hours, so it's best avoided. See "tips" below for the best routes to take into Washington DC.
    • Consider carpooling. Not only can you take advantage of carpooling lanes (where applicable), you are also being "green"!

Tips

  • Best routes to take by car:
    • Many prefer the Baltimore-Washington Parkway because trucks cannot use it.
    • I-95 has more lanes, but it is similarly congested during rush hours.
    • I-495, the Washington Beltway is another way into DC, but is also extremely congested during rush hours.
  • If you're starting from Baltimore's airport, BWI, you have a few options:
    • Taxi/shared van/car on 295 or I-495 into DC.
    • MARC (weekdays) or Amtrak to Union Station (a shuttle provides frequent service between the airport and train station.
    • Metrobus B30 to the Greenbelt Metro Station (a MetroRail green line station).
  • Carpooling is most effective in the DC Metro area.

Warnings

  • Allow yourself plenty of time to get where you are going during rush hours, as delays are common.
