Happy birthday, 14-year-old! Is your birthday coming up, but you're unsure how to celebrate it? Here are some ideas to help you out.

What kind of party?

  1. If you feel that you're too old for a standard birthday party, avoid throwing a traditional party. Instead, invite close friends or family members over for dinner and cake. If you want a bigger party, keep reading.
  2. Pick a theme. One of the most difficult things about celebrating a birthday is figuring out what you're going to do. Here are some ideas:
    • Theme Party (Hawaiian, Hollywood, etc.)
    • Spa party (at home or at a professional spa)
    • Makeover party
    • A shopping spree party (hit the local mall with your friends)
    • A movie party (watch a movie at the theatre or at your house)
    • A karaoke party (use your own karaoke machine or go to a karaoke bar)
    • Game show theme (American Idol, Survivor, Amazing Race, America's Next Top Model, etc.)
    • Go to an amusement park
    • Go horseback riding
    • Have a dance party (at your house or a community center)
    • Go roller skating or ice skating
    • Have a beach party
    • Go to a concert
    • Go to a sports game (baseball, football, soccer, etc.)
    • Go bowling
    • Play laser tag
    • Have a club party e.g rent a club
    • Campfire outdoors, (roast marshmallows, sleep in a tent, etc.)
    • Mud fight, food fight, etc.

Planning the party

  1. Plan the date. Pick a good day to have your party on. It's a good idea to hold it around your real birthday, but it's not necessary. Try to have your birthday party on a weekend, or at least on a Friday night. Another good option is having it on a day off from school. Be careful if your birthday is during summer, spring, or winter break, as some of your friends may be on vacation during that time. Also, know who else is having a party around the same time as you. You don't want to have your friends torn between going to your birthday or another person's birthday if they're on the same night.
  2. Decide on your venue. Your venue is where you will host the party. If you're holding a party at home, then your house is your venue - simple as that. However, if you're playing laser tag or throwing a dance party, make sure to book the venue in advance so that no problems occur on the day of the party.
  3. Know who you're inviting. Decide who you want at your party. Do you want it to be all girls, or all boys or mixed? How many people do you want to invite? Do you want 5-10 of your closest friends, or everyone in your grade? Talk it over with your parents and make sure that they approve your final decision.
  4. Send out the invitations. You could write out the invitations by hand, email them, text them out, mail them, call your friends, or tell them in person. You could also use free services on the Internet that create invitations, such as Evite. Though don't forget that some insecure websites could allow party crashers.

Preparing the party

  1. Get the food. Plan what you are going to need food-wise. You don't want to starve your friends while they're at your party. If you're only serving snacks, try chips, candy, pretzels, pop, juice, fruit, chocolate, etc. You can also have little appetizers such as sausage rolls or buffalo wings. If you're going to have your guests stay for a real meal (lunch or dinner), either order in some pizza, sushi, or Chinese food, or take them out to a restaurant. If you're serving them breakfast, make sure to have pancakes and/or waffles, bacon, sausage, eggs, etc. Also, don't forget to have a dessert of some sort, whether it be a cake, cupcakes, brownies, pie, ice cream, etc.
  2. Decorate. Decorating your party space isn't essential, but it makes a difference. It's more important if you're having a theme party, but it's always nice to have some little decorations, even if it's only a couple balloons. Decorate as little or as much as you want (and as much as you can take financially).
  3. Get some entertainment. You don't want your guests to be bored, so provide some entertainment. You can keep it simple and provide some music, or maybe a movie, depending on what kind of party you're having. You could also hire some live performers/dancers to really get the party started. If you want, hire a DJ to help out with the music. This is the best option if you're having a dance party. You could also have some classic party games such as:
    • Twister
    • Wink Murder
    • Truth or Dare
    • Scavenger Hunt/Treasure Hunt
    • Karaoke
    • Spin the Bottle
    • Trivia

Tips

  • Don't start the activities until all of the guests have arrived; the exception is waiting around for really late people––don't spoil the party because of their lateness.
  • Plan a lot of activities. They'll go faster than you expect.
  • Do things that you want to do!! Don't make decisions based on other people.
  • Have fun and don't let anyone bring you down its your day.

Warnings

  • Make sure everyone is included and having fun
  • Always pay attention to your guests and be aware of anyone who has food allergies because this will affect the food you serve at your party
  • Be sure to have age appropriate beverages.
  • Be careful of the movies you watch. Just because you're 14 now doesn't mean that everyone at the party will be okay with watching 14A movies.
